You might have kept a secret diary when you were a teenager where you recorded everything that happened. The most excellent feeling ever was expressing your disappointments and hardships without worrying about being questioned or criticised.

Fast forward to our current times, Journaling has replaced the practice of keeping diaries. Most adults still seek a place to express themselves, and journal writing is an excellent way to do that. A notebook can be a helpful tool for improving your mental health and helping you better manage your emotions.

Here are some beneficial factors that Journaling can do to improve your mental health:

  • You can manage your anxiety, reduce stress, and cope with depression.
  • It can help you prioritise problems, fears, and concerns.
  • Track any symptoms daily to recognise triggers and learn how to assess them.
  • It provides a space for positive self-talk and a way to track negative thoughts/behaviours.

Other than using it to keep in touch with your mood and mental health status on a day-to-day basis, you also need to ensure consistency in keeping up with your well-being.

Now that we’ve gone through the benefits of Journaling, how about we get started? Here are a few tips to remember that can help you begin your journey with Journaling:

  • Make it a daily habit to write. Instead of scrolling through your phone, use that free time to write down your thoughts and the things you are looking forward to for the day whenever you have a quiet moment, like having coffee in the morning. Keeping that habit can help you pick up your journal every day.
  • Keep a journal and pen you can carry around. To make sure that you can write your thoughts on paper quickly, make sure that you have a journal and pen handy. It can be any preferred blank journal or notebook as long as you can quickly bring it. If you like having a digital journal, use the available journaling apps for your tablet or smartphone.
  • Your journal, your rules. There is no restriction as to how you prefer to use your journal. Feel free to use it as a space to make mistakes, even grammar errors, and where you can write/doodle whatever you feel.
  • Use your journal accordingly. Again, it is your journal, so you follow your own rules. You can keep it as a private journal. You can also have it like a day-in-the-life journal that you can share with trusted close friends or a partner.

When the world feels chaotic, being able to do some journaling can keep things in order. It is an excellent way to wind down or destress from hectic times. Take it as a form of meditation for your mental wellness. Expressing your thoughts and feelings to get some weight off your shoulders can do wonders for your mind and body.
